“It is a cosmic energy to heal the root cause of all ills.”
Reiki, pronounced as (RAY kee), is a Japanese healing system - a simple hands on energy modality through which one modulates the energy within oneself and among others. It is a system through which one connects the cosmic energy with one’s innate power of healing present within oneself.
The word Reiki is made of two syllables:
Rei: universal, cosmic, divine or what is present all around us.
Ki : the life force energy - the energy which keeps us alive.
Ki, Chi, or prana are different words, with the same meaning – life force energy (Ki in Japanese, Chi in Chinese, Prana in Sanskrit). So Reiki is a divine cosmic energy or universal life force energy. As long as the “ki” is in abundance in our body, the body is healthy, happy and in harmony.
It is administered by laying hands on or above the body. During an individual session, the practitioners place their hands on or two to three inches abovethe fully clothed body of the recipient. With this holistic treatment, the practitioner facilitates flow of the subtle healing vibrations to be drawn by the recipient. The energy flows in and around the body as silken smooth, glowing radiance, healing the whole person on the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual levels. Reiki can be easily learned and practiced by everyone including children.
Reiki cannot be learned from a book or the conscious mind. The ability to flow the Reiki energy is acquired through an initiation, or attunement, into a specific lineage of healing energy handed down through Reiki Masters, which began with Dr. Mikao Usui. The attunement opens the chakras (the spinning wheels of energy present in our body or energy centers) enabling the person to act as an effective conduit for the transfer of the life force energy. This process aligns the electromagnetic field of the body with Reiki energy and the person becomes a Reiki channel for the life time. Reiki channel is an aseptic channel which never corrodes or destroys.
Reiki is easily learned, easily used, and is always extremely effective. Reiki has been used to treat everything from minor ailments and accidents to chronic disease. It has been successfully used alone and along with other holistic modalities. It is not something that should only be done when one is unwell – it is a measure to optimize ourselves on all fronts.
Reiki energy is of Divine Origin. The history of Reiki goes back over 2500 years and is well documented in the Vedas, and writings of Tibetan monks. It was rediscovered, and rediscovered again during the late 1800s by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Christian theologian and a dean of a university in Kyoto, Japan.
According to the story given by Mrs. Hawayo Takata, in the 1870s, some students of his class asked him if he believed that Jesus used to heal people by miraculous touch. Being a Christian monk, he answered, “Yes.” However, he was unable to answer how he did it. He realized that he must find out how Jesus healed with touch. Dr. Usui gave up his job and began to research the phenomena of healing with the hand. This search continued over a period of twenty years. He traveled to India, Tibet China, even Chicago, reading everything he could find on healing and gaining great theoretical knowledge but not the key to actually being able to heal by touch. In Japan, he traveled all the monasteries asking about how Jesus or Buddha had healed. In one small monastery, he found some ancient Sanskrit writings. Finally, he came to the understanding that to go further, required serious meditation. He went to the Mount Kuramadeclaring his intention to fast and meditate for twenty-one days and that if he did not come back, they should come and get his body. He went to the mountain, carrying twenty-one stones with which he would count the days. Twenty days passed and nothing happened. On the twenty-first day, Dr. Usui went through a metaphysical experience that finally gave him the fruits of his long search. On that day, in the horizon he saw a ball of light coming towards him. His first instinct was to get out of the way, but then, he realized that this might just be what he was waiting for. So, he allowed it to hit him right in the face. As it struck him in the third eye, he was taken on a journey and shown bubbles of all the colors of the rainbow in which were the symbols of Reiki, the very same symbols he was studying in the writings, but had been unable to understand. Now as he looked at them again, there was total understanding.
After returning from his experiences, he realized that he has the healing power in his hands. On his first day alone, he healed his own injured toe, his own starvation, the toothache of a child, and the Abbot’s great pain of arthritis of the knee. These are known as the first four miracles.
He spent the next seven years in beggar colonies of Kyoto, healing the poor and sick people. He assisted them with finding the jobs and elevating them out of poverty. A few years later he found old faces returning and when he questioned them as to why they returned to that place, they replied that begging was easier then working for a living. Dr. Usui realized that he had not taught them gratitude along with the healing. They focused only in physical ailments without dealing with the spiritual matters. The people did not understand the value of the gift he gave them. At this point, he developed the five Principles of Reiki that are now taught to Reiki students. Dr. Usui trained sixteen to eighteen Reiki Masters.
Before his death, he taught this system to Dr. Chiyiro Hayashi, a physician and ex-marine commander, and so, Hayashi succeeded Dr. Usui as Reiki Grand Master. For about ten years, he ran a Reiki clinic. During this time, he developed formal hand positions and divided Reiki training into three levels or degrees. He trained fifteen or sixteen masters including his wife, and Mrs. Hawayo Takata, an American lady of Japanese descent.
A typical Reiki therapy session lasts for sixty to ninety minutes. The practitioner places his/her hands at different location on the body, touching the surface or three inches above the body. Usually the session starts from the head for the full body treatment and slowly progresses all the way to the feet, and then the entire back of the body. Each location is covered for three to five minutes. The practitioner then balances the body to finish the treatment and pays his/her gratitude to the receiver. Then, they ask the receiver if he/she would like to have a glass of water and requests them to get up slowly.
The receiver experiences the energy as different sensations like warmth, cold, tingling, throbbing, pulsations, waves and radiant light. The receiver goes in to a deep relaxation stage or goes to sleep. The Reiki flow is the same from both hands. Reiki is always drawn, never given. The health of a practitioner during the session does not have any effect on the receiver. The practitioner acts as a conduit. In simple words, we can say that Reiki flows through the Reiki channel as water flows through a water pipe and is made available from the water faucet (the hands). During the treatment the provider also heals him/herself simultaneously by drawing the energy for themselves. Thus, it is always a win/win situation.
The Reiki flows wherever it is needed and what ever is the need. So there is no need to to monitor or control. One can practice Reiki anywhere and everywhere as there is no need to concentrate.
Reiki can be explained in many ways. It can be considered as energy science, which makes sense from the perspective of some theories within the field of quantum physics. By quantum physics, we learn that energy exists and moves first, and then matter follows it. Everything is energy at different levels of vibration. Our body is also entirely quantum energy at different levels of vibration. The slowest vibration makes up the bones in our body. The higher vibrations make up muscles, organs, and blood. Even higher vibrations make up our energy system (Chi, Ki, Prana etc…).
When there is a disturbance (disharmony) in our energy system of the body, it starts to bring about the physical changes that eventually become the disease or dis-ease.
Reiki is a “non-polarized” subatomic energy that is released as a Harmonic into energy blueprints (i.e. the body) that are in the state of disharmony. Once it leaves the subatomic world and enters the physical manifest world. It is acted upon by time, it gets polarized and makes “minor image” of any disharmonious frequency present in that energy blueprint. Thus bringing and restoring the normal harmony and well being. This accelerates the natural healing process of the body.
